4. SCP-004: The 12 Rusty Keys and the Door
Spoilers for SCP-004. Dismemberment and violence.
SCP-004 is an old wooden door at an abandoned factory, plus twelve rusty keys. Every key fits the same lock. The problem is where the door opens.
Ten of the keys lead into conditions that tear people apart. Their remains end up in different places, and some parts don't turn up until decades later. When they do, they're still fresh.
Of the two remaining keys, one leads to an impossibly large room. The other leaves survivors severely traumatized. One person eventually describes seeing an enormous green creature and having memories forced into his head.
The Foundation classifies it Euclid and restricts use of the keys to Level 4 personnel. Taking them off-site requires two Level 4 security escorts. Other parts of SCP-004 aren't allowed through the door.
They eventually build Site-62 inside the large room. It becomes a research and containment facility, with emergency supplies and a backup of the Foundation's database.
But time inside doesn't line up properly with time outside. Staff who have been gone for weeks experience only days. Eventually, everyone working there has to stay permanently. Their families are told they died in an industrial accident, and cloned bodies are prepared for funerals.
During a later power failure, the site spends 53 minutes in total darkness. Personnel report sensing people and creatures around them, although they can't see or physically feel them.
By that point, the Foundation is using the space as a working facility while still investigating what's there and how its time distortions work. The file never gives a complete answer to either.
