3. SCP-003: Biological Motherboard
Spoilers for SCP-003, including the restricted interview. Body horror.
SCP-003 has two parts. The first looks like a motherboard made from chitin, hair, and nails. It's thousands of years older than actual circuit boards, and it's sentient. The second is a stone tablet covered in glowing runes, apparently built to keep the first part contained.
The tablet is running out of power.
The whole thing is classified Euclid. The Foundation keeps it at least 35°C, preferably above 100°C, and supplies power to the tablet. Below 35°C, the biological part starts growing and converting material around it. It initially takes a shape resembling a huge brittle star. Once it contacts living material, that contact changes its development.
That's why the emergency instructions involve staff maintaining skin contact. Body heat can help, but contact is also required if growth continues.
A research project makes the tablet's condition worse. In a later experiment, the growing organism reaches the observation area, surrounds nine researchers, and forms a humanoid body. Power and heat eventually bring it back under control. The researchers are physically unharmed, but traumatized.
Then Dr. Moose's interview explains what the incident report leaves out. According to her, it wants to remake the world into a paradise for humanity, but doesn't understand human pain or emotions. She describes researchers being taken apart and put back together.
And humanity isn't necessarily its first choice. Moose says it could build that paradise around another sufficiently complex organism if it encountered that organism first. The emergency instructions make more sense after reading that part.
