I mentioned I wanted to experiment with a few spotlight series. Here’s one I’m starting: SCP. If you’re into fiction, games, comics, or writing, there’s a lot to explore here. I’m going to start working through the entries over the next couple of months, one at a time, and see how it goes. For anyone unfamiliar, SCP is a collaborative fiction project built around a fictional organization called the SCP Foundation. Its motto is “Secure, Contain, Protect.” Its job is to find, study, and contain things that break the rules of reality, usually while keeping the public from discovering them. Those things might be objects, creatures, places, or phenomena. A lot of the stories are written like internal files: what the anomaly does, how to contain it, and what happened when someone tried to understand it. There are thousands of entries. Horror is a big part of it, but there’s also science fiction, comedy, and plenty of room for other kinds of stories. There isn’t one single canon that everything has to fit into, so different writers can take the same world in different directions. Each spotlight will introduce an SCP, explain what it does, and get into its story and background. I also want to look at what makes the writing interesting, since that’s a big part of why this appeals to me. There’s an important detail for anyone thinking about using SCP in their own fiction. The wiki’s CC BY-SA 3.0 license allows adaptations, including work you sell, provided you credit the sources and authors and follow the ShareAlike requirements. Images and other third-party material need separate checks. That permission comes from the license; fair use is a separate question. For now, I want to have some fun exploring the fiction and sharing it here. I’ll start with a few and keep going from there.
