8/11 · Fourth Maccabees
Can devotion and reason help someone remain faithful under extreme suffering? Fourth Maccabees builds its argument around Eleazar, seven brothers, and their mother as they face persecution. Usually dated to the first or early second century CE, this Greek Jewish work brings philosophical language into a vivid account of martyrdom. It is a demanding read, with graphic descriptions of violence, and a revealing study of conviction. Townshend’s 1913 translation is now on Spirit Nation.
