Third Baruch takes a grieving Baruch through five heavens with an angel as his guide. Among its memorable sights are the sun’s chariot and a vast phoenix. Usually placed somewhere in the first three centuries CE, the work combines Jewish traditions with Christian transmission and revision. It turns questions about Jerusalem’s destruction toward the order of heaven and human conduct. Spirit Nation now includes Hughes’s 1913 English translation of the Greek version.
