10/11 · Philo’s On the Contemplative Life
What might a life built around study, prayer, and shared meals look like? Writing in the first century CE, the Jewish philosopher Philo describes the Therapeutae, a community of men and women near Alexandria in Egypt. He pays attention to their homes, reading, simple food, and communal singing. On the Contemplative Life offers an unusually detailed portrait of religious discipline in the ancient Mediterranean. Yonge’s 1855 English translation is now on Spirit Nation.
