Luminary Chat is open source now. I've retired it from my Labs and released it for people to run themselves. I didn't think continuing to develop it as a commercial product made sense for the time I'd need to put into it. There's already work here that someone else might want to use or build on, so I've made the source available. Luminary Chat is a self-hosted character-chat app. It supports Venice and OpenRouter with your own provider keys, separate characters and conversations, conversation summaries, editable memory, rooms, and import/export. The editable memory is worth pointing out. You can review and change what the app keeps in memory, which gives you a way to correct it as a conversation develops. Separate characters and conversations let you keep different chats organized, and import/export gives you a way to move that work around. There's also a 3D companion home. So if you're interested in how a character-chat app works, or want to experiment with a companion space alongside the conversations, both parts are there to explore. You could run it for your own chats, adapt the interface, change the characters, or use the project as a starting point for your own idea. The code is built with PHP, Laravel, SQLite, JavaScript, and Three.js, with setup instructions in the repository. You do need your own provider keys. External chat and image calls can cost money, and self-hosting the app still sends those requests to the provider you choose. I've marked Luminary Chat Gold at v2.1.1. I'm happy with where the released version is, and it's available as-is. Future features and maintenance are optional. The app code is MIT licensed; included third-party assets have their own licenses and attribution.
