I know I've said this before but I want to say it again. I will always prefer Beholder before he was nerfed. I thought them nerfing Beholder was the stupidest decision they'd ever made because he was an amazing character before they started making his history so complicated. Yeah he was all-powerful but that was the point of the character. He had weaknesses.
I've been heavy into fiction because I'm a writer all of my life. That was the first time in history that I'd ever heard of the phrase "selective omniscience" and it went on to become one of my favorite ideas. Somebody who's selectively omniscient can know everything there is to know about everything but not without thinking about it.
A good example: they have a normal brain, normal memory, but they have the ability to know everything at will. If they just come to Earth and they're walking through it, they may not know anything. Let's say they see a dog and they don't know what a dog is. They can focus on that dog and learn everything about that specific dog: its height, its weight, any physical conditions it has within it, any deformities, its history. The more they think about and focus on something, the more they learn about it instantly, selectively. They can broaden that and they'll start learning about everything related to every dog in existence or every breed in existence.
He instantly knows everything. He has to think on something, dwell on something, and allow that. That's why it's called selective omniscience. You can know everything but when you focus on it, that is when you learn it. Once you focus on something, you become aware of its existence and then you can scry out all the information related to it.
That's a theory, an idea that I had never thought of before, and it was amazing. It's just the way his powers work, the way the character works, the way that his storyline unfolded, and then they started doing dumbass retcons on it that just made the whole thing way stupider.
I think there were three different major retcons that changed the whole history of the Beyonder and basically rewrote all the history. The original Beyonder had such a profound impact on the Marvel world. Characters had self-esteem issues for years because of the Beyonder. Even Nightcrawler had a crisis of faith for a long time, didn't know if he even believed in God anymore, and started questioning his abilities.
I think it was the New Mutants. The Beyonder wiped them out of existence completely and there was a lot of fallout from that. Retconning everything they did just threw all those cool storylines away. I think I will always believe that those retcons were the biggest mistake that Marvel ever made.
I get it. It's not a big deal. It's just one character. It was an era of Marvel Comics but to me it was one of the best characters they've ever created, with one of the best structures and storylines out of all the characters. It was one of the most memorable mom moments that I've run into in all of my years reading comics. It just kind of sucks that they nerfed him to begin with.
