Poem: Looking Back (Forgive formatting, didn't copy and paste well).
Looking Back.
Looking over my shoulder, I see him coming. Inching toward me. Step by step. Close and closer. I try to run, but can’t move. I try to scream, but can’t speak. I groan, and no sound escapes my lips. Absolute silence, and in that silence I groan from my very soul.
Over my other shoulder, he’s there too. But different. Calmer. Nicer. Beauty. Peace. Love. Joy. Step by powerful step. He fights for me? Battling for my soul? They fight.
He doesn’t stop. Darkness. Hatred. Violence. Destruction. Step by incrementally destructive step, waltz of death.
Then there’s silence. No shoulder to look back over. No shoulder to see from. No shoulder to cry on.
Only silence.
Internal. External. A vicissitude of voids balancing harmoniously in the fractured midnight sky.
Silence. Darkness. Betrayal. A vicious vindication of cumbersome hero.
Then the breathing. It breathes.
Then the smell. Rot. Sulfur. Death.
