I don't know who else is going to remember the .hack series from back in the day. It was one of my favorites. It was a long while back. I haven't played it in a while.
There was the main story:
- .hack//Infection was part one.
- .hack//Mutation was part two.
- .hack//Outbreak was part three.
- .hack//Quarantine was part four.
That was like one gigantic RPG they had split across four games. At the end of each game it saved out from one game to the next and it was an amazing story, one of the best older games I'd ever played.
So that was in 2002 and 2003 and then they did a second series of games considered somewhat like a rebirth about three years later. Between 2006 and 2007 it was .hack//GU, which was Volume 1: Rebirth, Volume 2: Reminiscence, and Volume 3: Redemption. Those took place years later in the same type of world, the same type of game, and then there was another series of games called The Last Recode, which was a remastered version of the original .hack GU games plus an extra chapter: Rebirth, Reminiscence, Redemption, and Reconnection for the Recode, which I think is interesting. You don't really need to play the original PlayStation 2 GU if you're trying to play it.
The best thing would be to hit the original series, which is Infection, Mutation, Outbreak, and Quarantine. That gives you the first four games in a consistent story and then you can jump from there to Last Recode. That'll be Rebirth, Reminiscence, Redemption, and Reconnection and you pretty much got the whole series. It's an amazing playthrough. It's probably one of my favorite older games.
