All right, Wolverine's been out since midnight last night. I wanted to start on it last night. I just didn't get a chance so I'm just now getting around to playing it some today. I'm about 5 or 6 hours into it today. I've been playing it alongside Kingdom Come: Deliverance 1 because I'm trying to get through that series since I haven't played it before. I just recently finished Dispatched, which was an amazing game, so I'm really wanting to dig into Wolverine now.
After about 5 hours I wanted to give my two cents on the game. I have seen a lot of the negative reviews and a lot of the things that people have been complaining about. So far after about 5 hours in, I do see that there are some issues with the game. There are some things that are worth complaining about, some things that could have been done differently.
All in all, being an old-school Wolverine fan from back in the comics and knowing most everything there is to know about Wolverine as a character (from so long being exposed to who he is, reading his comics and everything else, and being an old-school gamer that's been gaming for my entire life since I was 3 or 4, so for almost 4 decades), in my opinion there are, of course, some things to complain about but you're going to get that with any game. There are some things that are obviously valid issues and valid concerns. I don't think there are enough to warrant negative reviews but there are some things that could have been done better.
A lot of people were complaining about the blue marker for the scent tracker or the way that the scents are handled in the game. There are two different things:
- The scent marker, which shows the blue smoke, which you follow around when you're on your quest. Any time that blue smoke has come up, it's almost always been, so far, in relation to a scent, which would make sense with who Wolverine is. You smell something, you get a scent, and then you track the scent. Very simple, most of the time unobtrusive. It's just there and you follow it, simple as that.
- A blue line that also resembles smoke and is on the ground. It may be a combination of his smell, mostly just to mark where you're supposed to go.
I didn't check to see if there was an option for it. There might be an option to actually turn that off but for the most part it wasn't much of an issue. It does show up most of the time and it's on the ground but it's easy to ignore if you don't like it and it just makes it easier to get where you want to go.
There is a marker that shows up, showing you where to go if you hit R3. It's called a hint. That's another aspect of the game that people have complained about. And I do agree that, to some extent, the game does give you a fair bit of handholding in regards to showing you where to go and what to do next. But those complaints, the three main things that people have complained about:
- the handholding on locations
- finding your way around
- the hints
- the smelling and everything
I don't see a problem with them in general. There are plenty of games out there that don't hold your hand. Specifically I think maybe they just assumed that gamers wouldn't be as skilled as they thought or maybe they just wanted to make it a more casual experience. I don't know. To me that's not really even annoying. It's just a quirk of the game. Every game has its own quirks. Those are three potentially valid complaints.
Combat: I love the combat so far. I've liked the battles. I like the way that the claws work. I like the mechanics.
There are some bugs in the game. You'll probably see multiple videos of him being on his motorcycle while he's standing up on it in a weird position. I had one situation where I jumped onto a tree and slid down and then he got stuck in a sliding position and was sliding down for like 5 minutes before he jumped off. That's another issue.
The game itself, in my opinion, has a great story, great voice acting, good characters, and a good setup.
