Tonight on Other World, one of the games I'm building on my website (which I posted links to before), I made a few decisions that turned out to be really worth it.
One of them is that I was building my city and I had my interiors and exteriors loading within a radius of the character or the camera, depending on which one you were looking at. I realized that I had gotten the scaling off on the ratios of the city. When you're walking around the city, you walk inside of a building and there's no room really to do anything. The exterior looks great but when you step into the interior, there's not enough room to build everything out. I made the decision to convert all of those interiors into separate areas. When you enter a given building it'll take you to that interior instead, pretty much loosely following the layout of the building itself. I can scale it up more so I have a lot more room inside the building to do whatever I need to do with the characters.
It turned out to be an amazing decision and worked out so well. I spent about 6 hours going through and starting to redesign all of my interiors after that and I'm really getting close to the look and the feel that I want. As soon as I get the layout locked down perfectly, I want to redo all the models for my cars because they're pretty rudimentary. After that I'm going to be working on new features, new game mechanics, and starting to build out the actual functionality.
This is a game that I started as an experiment just to play around with something and ended up coming up with a full game concept that I've been working on for the last several weeks. It's turned out to be a project that I've had a hell of a lot of fun building.
