Another topic I've been wanting to talk about that I haven't really talked extensively about (and I still probably won't but I do want to cover a few topics with it): there's just so much.
I've been reading comics a long time so normally when I'm reading a comic series, I really get deeper into the series. I want to read everything about it, all the comics in that universe or in that world set.
I started with the Grim Fairy Tales universe and I've not been disappointed but it's a monster. There's just so much, way more than what was in The Boys. Starting back with the Celia anthology in 2005, I read through all of those. I read through all the Wonderland stuff from the 2007 to 2009 window, all the way throughout the Dreamreader saga, Robin Hood, Oz, Godstorm, and Unleashed. Now I'm kind of working through Age of Darkness. I read a lot of them but I still have quite a few and I'm kind of working through them side by side so I'm closing out gaps when I can.
I'm in the middle of reading Code Red right now and then I got Quest after that. I've still got the rest of the Dark Ages Age of Darkness comics that I got to knock out. There are quite a few there. Some of them are duplicates that I've already read so I'll work through that. I'm expecting maybe another 4 or 5 nights before I catch up on the Age of Darkness series and get all of that rolled out.
This is a big jump for me, though, because right now it kind of overlaps the stuff that I'm reading right now. Age of Darkness and Realm War overlap into the 2015 area, where you're getting into Arcane Acre and Apocalypse. I am going to have some overlap there and there's a lot of stuff that I still haven't read yet that I'm just kind of working through.
I absolutely love the Wonderland stuff. I absolutely love the way the interpretations of the characters have hit in different ways. It's just hard to keep track. There's so much but it's amazing. I like how they did the structure of the Titans being the supreme Highborn and then the gods below them, Zeus, and just seeing how they interact with each other. They did a really good job reconciling old mythologies into the storylines and into the world.
Sometimes it's hard to keep track of where a character is because it's got multiple different things going on. I was absolutely horrified by what they put Alice through in Wonderland. Just her whole family, the littles. Whoever wrote that whole universe, the way that things weave and interlock with each other is just so well done. It's hard to keep track of. Now it's not as much that it's hard to keep track of as it's hard to reconcile it into reality. What all is happening? You've got a multi-generational curse going back, not just before Alice, even before Alice with her grandparents, but it starts with Alice, and then her daughter, and then their daughter. Alice, and then her daughter, and then her daughter. The way that they set it up is crazy, and how the characters change and evolve over time and shift. There's a lot happening and it's very well written.
That's just one aspect of it. There are so many different things going on in all four of the runs and they keep track of it really well. Amazing read. I've been loving every minute of it so far.
