Gears of War is one of those franchises that just feels right. The weight of the movement, the crunch of the gunplay, the brutal executions—it all comes together in a way that makes the combat some of the most satisfying in any shooter. The cover-based mechanics changed the game when Gears first dropped, and even now, it still holds up as one of the best third-person shooters out there.
But Gears isn’t just about the action—it’s also got one of the best stories in a shooter series. Marcus Fenix, Dom, Cole, Baird—these characters aren’t just badass soldiers; they’re real. The emotional weight of the series, especially moments like Dom’s arc in Gears 2 and 3, hit hard. The Locust War, the desperation of humanity trying to survive—it’s all done so well.
Here’s the list of Gears games I’ve beaten:
- Gears of War
- Gears of War 2
- Gears of War 3
- Gears of War: Judgment
- Gears of War 4
- Gears 5
I’ve finished all of them, and I still go back to the earlier ones from time to time. Gears 3 is probably my favorite—it had the best mix of story and gameplay, and the ending still sticks with me. Gears 5 was solid too, but I’m curious to see where they take the story next. I know there’s another Gears game coming, and I just hope they keep that classic Gears feel while evolving the series in a meaningful way.
I like that it feels more like a down and dirty shooter. It’s not as… “Simple” or… “Friendly” as most shooters. But it’s grimey. Dark. Twisted. I love every second of the entire series.
